Next Thursday at 4:00 p.m., the Puerto Vallarta Pride Parade takes over the streets of the Romantic Zone, and if you’ve never experienced it before, prepare yourself. It’s not just a parade — it’s one of the most joyful, inclusive, colorful celebrations I’ve ever witnessed anywhere in the world. I had only been living in Puerto Vallarta for about two weeks last year when I accidentally stumbled into Pride season. At the time, I knew almost nothing about the city. What I didn’t realize was that Puerto Vallarta has long been considered one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Mexico, especially around Zona Romántica, where rainbow flags fly year-round and inclusivity feels woven into everyday life.
A Warm Welcome in Zona Romántica
I didn’t know many people yet, so I did what I’d already become used to doing after moving to Mexico — I went out alone. I stopped at a restaurant near Basilio Badillo and within minutes found myself adopted by a large group of lesbian women who treated me like an old friend.
As the mother of a transgender son, seeing that level of openness and acceptance honestly hit me emotionally. There was no tension, no judgment, no pretending. Just people fully being themselves and celebrating each other.
The Parade That Changed Everything
The Pride Parade itself was absolute sensory overload in the best possible way. Music blasted through the streets, glitter floated through the air, and the entire neighborhood looked like a rainbow had exploded over it. Somewhere along the way, a group of fabulous gay men painted rainbows across my face and tied colorful fabrics into my hair so I could properly join the celebration.
Freshly divorced at the time, I also have to admit something else: I had never seen so many beautiful men in one place in my entire life. It felt like showing up starving to an all-you-can-eat buffet and realizing none of it was actually for you. Hilarious. Slightly tragic. But hilarious.
Why You Should Experience It
What stayed with me most wasn’t just the party — it was the feeling. Puerto Vallarta Pride felt like freedom, love, and belonging wrapped into one unforgettable evening. By the end of the night, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much.
If you’re in Puerto Vallarta next Thursday, head to the Romantic Zone before 4:00 p.m. and experience the Pride Parade for yourself. Even if you arrive alone, chances are you won’t stay that way for long.
