The show that never repeats
It is the evening ritual that occurs everywhere in the world once a day. It can be introspective, quiet, and reflective for some. Or it can be happily celebrated and an experience that creates memories for many. Painters, photographers and artists throughout history have been inspired sharing their interpretation of the day’s finale. It is the ultimate evening show, gratis in Puerto Vallarta approximately 325 clear nights a year. This spectacular color show is the sunset, or “El atardecer” in Spanish.
For those who have visited Puerto Vallarta and the many who reside here understand the special local pride for the memorable sunsets on the Playa, which are known worldwide for their brilliant colors. They can be seen from almost any vantage point looking west or south, on the Playa, or looking from the mountains above into the bay depending on the season and position in the sky.
Ten years of chasing the light
Puerto Vallarta is in the center of the Bay of Banderas, one of the largest natural bays in the world. When the sun sets in any direction to the west, the unobstructed ocean horizon view and panoramic vista is ever changing color. Regardless of the season, rain or the absence of it in the dry season November through April, are crisp and brilliant sunsets. The true rainy season in May through October presents large dramatic clouds. They blend with the sky and create art, day after day, a new study. The sunset starts with bright yellow late afternoons that begin to slowly fade to shades of soft blues, mandarin pinks, yellow-oranges, violets, purples and deep indigos. The Sierra Madre Mountains, which has a jungle atmosphere with daily moisture and humidity, play a hand in the variety and intensity of the color performance nightly.
Ten years ago, with two suitcases, and my Rescue Dog Gia, I moved to Vallarta, I’ve lived in the jungle in Mismaloya overlooking the ocean, above Zona Romantica with sweeping views of town and the Bay of Banderas, and now on Playa Camarones in Cinco de Diciembre. Every locale has had me inspired to paint new bold colors and changes of the intensity of hues and light. I’ve been adding painted woods and fine art prints to the collection for 2026. Galleria Dante on Basilio Badillo in Zona Romantica has my newest “Grand Vallarta Dia” Tower Acrylic prismatic painted on Parota wood which measures 5 feet (153cm).
What’s new in 2026
My newest inspired work this Spring, 2026, “Pacifica Puerto Vallarta” Acrylic on gallery border canvas. 13 inches square (36 cm) by 3 inches (8 cm). Richly textured, bold, bright, tropical ocean hues are accented with 24K Gold and Platinum. The linear style and iridescent accents of metallics and color change with the natural light of its environs. It’s a fresh direction, a seasoned style from previous works created. Adelante!
